Premium
The monthly premium approved by the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) for your premium region, age group and accident cover. The comparison multiplies it by 12.
Deductible
You pay your medical bills yourself until they reach the deductible. Adults and young adults choose between CHF 300 (standard deductible) and CHF 2โ500, children between CHF 0 and CHF 600. The higher the deductible, the lower the premium.
Retention fee
Above the deductible you pay 10% of the remaining costs, up to CHF 700 a year for adults and young adults and CHF 350 for children. Deductible and retention fee together are your co-payment.
Premium reduction
If your canton grants you a premium reduction, you can enter it. It is subtracted at the end and is the same for every deductible, so it never changes which deductible is cheapest.
Insurance models
Standard: free choice of doctor. Family doctor / HMO: you always go to your family doctor or an HMO practice first. Telmed: before seeing a doctor you call a medical advice line. Other models combine these options.
Alternative models are cheaper, but you have to follow their rules.
Accident cover
If you work at least 8 hours a week for one employer, you are insured against accidents through your employer and can exclude accident cover from your health insurance.
Switching insurer or deductible
To switch insurer on 1 January, your notice must reach the insurer by 30 November. You can move to a higher deductible on 1 January; for a lower deductible the deadline is also 30 November.
Alternative models and optional deductibles can have other deadlines, so check your policy.
Not included
The contribution to the costs of a hospital stay of CHF 15 per day, supplementary insurance, and the lower premiums from the third child.
Where the data comes from
Premiums are the official FOPH figures from priminfo.admin.ch for 2027. Always confirm the final premium with the insurer before switching.
Possible change
In March 2026 the Federal Council opened a consultation on raising the standard deductible from CHF 300 to CHF 400. Nothing has been decided yet; this site will be updated if needed.
Keeping the same plan and insurer for the new year
After the official announcement of the premiums, your health insurer sends every insured person a policy with the 2027 premiums. If you do not cancel, your current plan continues into the new year with the premium change stated in the policy.
Cancelling your insurance or plan the easy way
The easiest way to cancel your current policy is to send a written cancellation through your account on your insurer's online portal, and to ask for a confirmation of cancellation. In our experience, your request is processed faster this way.
